This week, I received an email from a UK investment company. As all my investments are made through Viral Angels, I didn't take that much notice until, at the foot of the page, I saw a reference to their

So, I had a quick scan and the following stood out. You will have to forgive me if I have been a little selective, but it was rather wordy, and I have omitted nothing of real importance. You can read the full article here

  • The economic challenges of recent years have transformed the business landscape in the UK and across the world. While big businesses have struggled, new, smaller companies have been enjoying major success.
  • But these testing times are also producing new, strong and streamlined business start-ups.. by making their business work in a deep recession they are primed to seize the advantage when the economy improves.
  • In the coming years it is these companies that we’ll be focusing on. They may be small now but they have big plans for growth and will be instrumental in shaping a new and exciting business landscape.
  • Many new companies are looking to crowd funding as a quick way to raise funds for expanding and taking their businesses to the next level. The idea is simple, a company releases an offer for investors to buy into and raise the funds it needs. In return the company secures the investment against an asset until it is repaid.
  • We have received many applications for funding, each of which has gone through careful due diligence and research.
  • Once all of these requirements are assured it is only then that we present the opportunity to our Angel Investment Programme to attract funding.
These are all great reasons why people might be interested in becoming angel investors, or involve themselves in crowd funding. The opportunity for significant returns, or to to find oneself a shareholder in the next Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or Apple is exciting.

However, the last paragraph hit me like a slap in the face

  • In accordance with FSA rules we can only provide details of these opportunities to certified ‘Sophisticated’ or ‘High Net Worth’ investors. If you would like to become certified follow this link.Once your application is confirmed we will add you to our ‘professional investor network’, which allows you to receive notifications of the latest investment opportunities as they are released.

So, to get involved with this program, you already have to be sophisticated and wealthy. I am not sure what is meant by sophisticated, but we all have a notion of what wealthy is. It is having a lot of money. For most people the door has just been firmly slammed shut.

I took a look around the internet, and discovered the following

  • S****s is targeted solely at investors who are sufficiently sophisticated to understand these risks and make their own investment decisions.
  • Venture **** helps readers better understand the mindsets of sophisticated investors...

I guess what this all boils down to is that an angel investor is a wealthy person who is willing to carry out extensive research, before entering into complex financial and legal negotiations, in order to take an interest in a business for the purpose of growing that business, and making a better profit than he or she could make elsewhere.

So, you have accumulated enough money to become an angel investor. Now you are faced with the following statistic.

Out of ten business start-ups, five will fail, three will break even, one will make a profit, and one will make a huge profit.

When asked about angel investing, David S Rose was given the scenario that most angel investors accepted that one third of investments would fail, one third, would break even, and one third would turn a profit.

David S Rose

His response?

"At best! At best! I mean, you are talking of getting one in ten of your investments as a home run, and you are assuming that half will go bankrupt, and wipe out totally"

Faced with this, how does the average person get into angel investment?

The answer lies in the concept of collective investment managed by experienced professionals.

Viral Angels fits this model perfectly. For an affordable monthly subscription, Viral Angels identify companies that hold the promise of future profits, and who have a commitment to full public listing within eighteen months.

Viral Angels help those companies with all the legal, and compliance issues that they will have to undergo before listing. In exchange, Viral Angels members are gifted shares in those companies. This gives value to the members, and provides a shareholder base, without which there would be no liquidity.

As Viral Angels are headed by a management team that has brought over 200 companies to market worldwide, and are now working with an ever increasing number of companies, Viral Angel members are assured that they need neither the sophistication and high net worth, nor to take the risk of limited exposure to any one business.

This makes Viral Angels a winner. You can read more about Viral Angels here. If you decide to join, you will need my reference yadevolkram@fsmail.net.

Regards, Mark
